World War One – Your County Needs You!Rutland in WWI -Teachers Pack..
A chance to explore Rutland during the First World War. Research an individual soldier. Investigate First World War artefacts and make a campaign medal.
The session encompasses history, literacy and citizenship.

Rutland in the First World War Teachers’ Pack
The Teachers’ Pack contains 69 pages of information sheets, resource sheets and worksheets. It is free to all schools both in Rutland and outside of the county.

Stone Age to Iron Age – Prehistory Made Easy!
This session gives an overview of the main themes of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. Children will then investigate the lifestyles of our early ancestors by looking at and handling our great collection of real local artefacts.

The Romans in Rutland
Discover the impact the Romans had on this area and what artefacts have been left behind. Children will have the chance to handle and examine a range of real objects such as pottery, jewellery, coins and mosaic fragments.
The workshop includes a gallery trail and craft based activities.

Homes in the Past – Before Electricity
An introductory session for Reception age children, exploring what life was like before electricity.
Children get to explore and handle objects, have a go at an ‘object-hunt’ around the museum and dress up in old-fashioned clothes. There is also a fun craft activity.

Victorians
Come and be a Victorian for the day. Dress up and get busy, there’s plenty of washing to do and the drying as well. Explore our Victorian kitchen, handle real objects and learn what life was like back then.
The session aims to demonstrate to children what homes and life were like in Victorian times. The activities incorporate history, science and literacy.

WWII – Life on the Home Front
Come along to the museum and prepare for war!
Children will have the opportunity to make their own gas mask and identity card, experience rationing including weights, measures and rationing books and live through a mock air raid!
The session encompasses history, art & design, maths, literacy and citizenship.

Down on the Farm
Find out about what farming was like in the past before mechanisation. Children will have a chance to handle and explore original farming hand tools which were used for ploughing, sowing and harvesting. The session also includes a farming based worksheet around the museum and a craft activity. The session encompasses history, art & design and literacy.

Seaside Holiday
Come and learn about what holidays used to be like. Have fun handling objects, designing and making holiday posters or postcards, making a seashell souvenir box and Punch & Judy puppets and also playing in our Punch & Judy theatre. The session encompasses history, geography, art & design, literacy and citizenship.

Christmas is Coming!
Come along and get festive and explore how Christmas was celebrated in the past. Children will be able to make a Tudor style pomander as well as a Victorian Christmas card and a traditonal toy. There will also be a Christmas Hunt around the museum.
The session encompasses history, art and design and literacy.
Key Stage – Reception and Key Stage 1

Duration: 1/2 day (aprox 2 hours)
Available : November and December

Self-facilitated Visits
If you would like to visit the museum with your class without taking part in a led session, you are very welcome and we will try and help out and provide helpful resources as much as we can. Please contact the museum Heritage and Learning Officer to arrange your self-facilitated visit.

Your can also hire the education room for a small fee so you can leave coats and bags and have lunch if you require.

Loans Boxes
Loans boxes can be borrowed from the museum, usually £10 per 2 weeks, but please call to check availability.
