Visit Us – What you need to know

We're Good To Go logo

We are so pleased you are thinking of visiting the Museum. We have made a few changes to ensure you can enjoy your visit.

Please read the information below for further details.

Our current opening times are:

Monday / Wednesday / Saturday 1.30 – 4.30pm. No booking is required

Face Coverings

Please wear your mask, if you are able to do so. A list of those exempt can be found here.

NHS Test and Trace

On Arrival – You will be welcomed by a member of our team who will ask for your details to support the NHS Test and Trace service.

Reduced Visitor Numbers

Visitor numbers are limited to 20 at any one time. You do not need to book, but please wait until a member of our team welcomes you through.

Please keep to a 2m social distance – that is about 2 sheep in length, 2 ponies or 1 horse!

Hand Gel Stations

Please use the gel wash at reception as you enter and we encourage you to use the gel that has been placed in the main hall and Poultry Hall gallery.

Reception and Shop

Our reception and information desks now have screens to protect both you and our staff. Please ensure you use these when approaching the desks.

Our temporary exhibition has been removed. This has been replaced with a fabulous shop which allows for easy social distance.

Only card payments will be accepted in the museum – however, do feel free to use change in the Friends of Rutland County Museum & Oakham Castle donation boxes. The Friends are very grateful for your support which in turn helps to support the Museum and Castle.

Study Area

For the time being, the Study Area is closed to the public.

Cleaning

The museum has been thoroughly cleaned before your visit, but please refrain from touching any exhibits – we know they are very tempting.

Toilets

We do have toilets, but due to social distancing rules, we have a strict one in one out policy. Please ask our team who will advise.

Lift and Balcony Displays

Our lift which gives access to the balcony may only be used by those with mobility issues. Please see the member of our team who can assist you.

For everyone else accessing the balcony displays, there is a one way system in place. Please be aware that on occasion you may be asked to wait for a short while, to allow for lift access.

The remaining areas of the Museum are available for you to view in any order you wish. We only ask that you respect the 2m distancing.

Accessibility

Accessibility

The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with semi-automatic front doors.

A wheelchair is available to borrow on request.

A hearing loop is fitted in the Museum Entrance Gallery and in the Colonel Noel Suite.
Guide dogs are welcome.
For more information, please see our Accessibility Guide

Accessible toilets, and baby changing facilities are available.

Parking

Car parking (‘Pay & Display’) is available outside the Museum. Five spaces are reserved specifically for museum visitors during Museum opening hours. Free disabled parking is available directly outside the Museum entrance.

Although we have a few changes, we want you to enjoy your visit. We don’t expect you to remember all this, we will have staff and notices around the Museum which we hope will make your visit both enjoyable and stress free.

Please tell us what you think

One last thing – we have removed our visitor book, but we would really love to hear your thoughts about your visit. Instead of signing our book, we would be very grateful for comments on Facebook and Tripadvisor
